When Dahlia Season Happens in Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz dahlias come into bloom reliably around the first week of July and stay in full production through mid-October. That’s roughly 15 weeks of florist quality, cut-worthy stems if the season cooperates, which in Santa Cruz it usually does.
The sweet spot — when the field is at its most colorful, stems are long, and variety is at its peak — runs from late July through September. If you want to plan your visit around the best possible selection, aim for that window. August tends to be our most spectacular month, when dozens of varieties are hitting their stride at the same time.
October is a different kind of beautiful. The days get shorter, the plants feel the shift, and the blooms take on a richness that summer doesn’t always offer. Burgundies, deep peaches, and rusty oranges come forward in ways they don’t in the heat of August. It’s a quieter, moodier palette, and a lot of our members love it for exactly that reason.

Why Santa Cruz Grows Such Good Dahlias
Dahlias are native to Mexico and naturally prefer warm days with cooler nights — and that’s essentially what coastal Santa Cruz delivers all summer long. The marine layer keeps temperatures moderate, nights drop into the low 60s even in August, and we rarely see the kind of prolonged triple-digit heat that can stress plants and cause blooms to ball up. It’s why santa cruz dahlias consistently outperform what most gardeners grow in warmer, drier inland climates.
We grow in raised beds in zone 9b, which gives us excellent drainage and lets us manage soil amendments precisely. No synthetic pesticides, no synthetic fertilizers. The plants go into healthy soil and stay there until we dig them in October, which shows in both the flower quality and the tubers we harvest at the end of each season.

What’s Growing at the Farm This Season
We grow dozens of varieties across our 19 beds, and the lineup shifts each year as we trial new introductions and phase out underperformers. A few that have become farm staples and that our guests ask about by name:
Coseytown Gale is a warm peachy-coral with a slightly informal form that photographs beautifully and holds well in a vase. It’s a favorite for bouquet builders because it plays well with almost everything around it.
20th Ave Old Major is a deep, moody burgundy-purple — a big dinner plate type that stops people in the field. When it’s open, it’s one of the most striking flowers we grow.
Beyond those, expect a full range of forms — balls, pompons, waterlilies, cactus, and decoratives — in colors from pale blush to near-black. Part of the pleasure of a U-Cut visit is that you don’t know exactly what will be open that day. We share what’s blooming in the days before your appointment so you have a sense of what to look forward to.
How to Pick Dahlias at the Farm
Dynomite Farm is appointment-only. We keep visits intentionally small and private so every guest has space to move through the beds without feeling rushed. You come out, we hand you snips and a bucket, and the field is yours.
Most guests spend 45 minutes to an hour picking. A typical bouquet ends up with 10 to 15 stems, and the range of what’s open on any given day means your arrangement will be genuinely one of a kind.
Booking takes a few minutes through the farm website, and we send everything you need before your visit. No walk-ins, and spots during peak season go quickly — especially August weekends.
Growing Your Own Santa Cruz Dahlias

Every tuber comes from organically grown plants, and we include growing notes tailored to our climate so you have the best possible start regardless of whether you’re in zone 9b or somewhere nearby.
